Hey guys,
In preparation for my turbo next xmass id like to start gathering parts for some head mods. I want to make the engine breath a fair bit better, that being said what im looking at is:

1. Stage 2 FI cams
2. New springs and retainers to be able to rev to 7600.
3. Couldnt find anything on oversized valves?
4. 2zz intake manifold so i can have bigger throttle body or some kind of adapter to fit it to the plastic one
5. Port and polish + 3 angle valve job if no bigger valves can be found.

Except m1tch i havent seen anybody doing some job to the head so any input is welcomed :)

A nice set of supporting mods if you are going for a really big amount of power. What is your target? What are you doing bottom end and gearbox wise? I can't see you being able to get oversize valves in. The valve seats are very small, so no real scope for big valves. 2zz intake manifold will be good for big boost, being metal it won't pop under high boost.
Ex 2GR-FE roadster. Sold it. Idiot.  Now Jaguar F-Type P450 75 Edition RWD. Officially over by the bins.

Thanks, thats it(supporting mods)! I want to make the engine breath better and then to aim for power. I will be using EFR 6258 with t25 flange target ~350 at the crank. Gearbox is the pain in the butt part of the build but for now i will try to use my 5 speed and to limit the torque to 250 that way id have nice power at 7600 rpms(at least thats the plan). Bottom end will be 79.5mm 8.8:1 wiseco pistons and traum rods with the head and block skimmed a bit to make it 9.5:1 compression.

So if no bigger valves can be installed my plan of action would be:

1. Stage 2 FI cams.
2. Springs and Titanium retainers.
3. Port and polish + 3 angle valve job.
4. 2zz manifold + TB coz its big :D

You can try Streetwerks for the enlarged 2zz throttle body but don't hold your breath as I think they were stopping doing them due to the lack of supply of donor bodies.
If you order one now you might just get it by Christmas...

2zz manifold requires an adapter plate and I remember it being quite thick. Clearance issues?
I believe someone on Spyderchat ran one and ended up taking it off. But... With supporting mods and a big ol' turbo... Different story perhaps. No doubt it's gotta be better for big power than the flimsy plastic one on 1zz.

For bigger pistons I've been told that cooling is key as the liners are already quite thin. So, budget in a big ol oil cooler, bigger sump, high efficiency charge cooler and big radiator for coolant. Or liners of course. Then obviously the rods are kak, so, forged.

There was another big discussion on Spyderchat about the head and valves. It all got a bit (lot) over my head but something about the valves being at suboptimal angles for big power. I.e. Nothing you can do with the head. It is what it is,for economy.

...neutiquam erro.

Id be happy with stock 2zz TB to be honest. I dont rly like Streetwerks coz they do not do anything on their own but just stuff on exchange basis at least what ive seen for the roadster. I could be wrong of course :)

A friend went with stage 1 cams, and a careful port and polish on a flow bench and multi-angle seats.  He tried some intake mods to open the air flow and after lots of time and money gained 5 hp.  The power peaked at 6,300 so revving higher would do nothing.  He also tried the cheap MAF mod often mentioned on Spyderchat with a stock head and cams and got almost exactly the same results.  The mod is basically raise the MAF 1/4" (about 6 mm) with a spacer and go to larger injectors.  The dyno charts done on the same dyno were nearly identical.  Both tests were done using a Zero Header, which many consider one of the best.

Stage 2 cams may do better, but don't expect miracles

If you want more high RPM power, go to a 2ZZ

Ill have rods for sure and if i go with dartons ill be going for 82mm coz its too much headache just for the liners. Oil cooler is on the list of course and a bigger rad. For the charge cooler will be using frozen boost 600 hp core.

On the other thing about the head and the angles there are different stories but ideally id like more revs and valve job + P&P. FI solves the bad angles i think.

Sorry, just enlighten me as I'm feeling a bit dim here. FI? FL?

Sorry, yeah, I couldn't decide if it was an I or an L and you were thinking that the facelift engine had better flow (it wouldn't be the first time someone has thought there were massive differences so no offence intended [emoji23])

Be aware that the 2zz manifold is HUGE and isn't a direct fit to the 1zz head, also the stock plastic manifold can flow plenty of air as standard but you need to remove the plastic divider that can snap off when going from boost to vacuum etc.

I am still looking at manifold options, I have a plastic 1zz manifold, a earlier metal 1zz manifold and a 2zz manifold on the bench.

I want bigger TB thats why the 2zz manifold. And also revving higher will need some more top end breathing thus the manifold. Do you think we can mod it some way so it fits? I think somebody else has done it before.
