But of a clunk when braking

So stuck in stop start traffic today, I noticed a clunk in what felt like the front right when pressing the brake pedal.
The sound would not be repeated if pressing the pedal again when stopped, but if I started moving again and then pressed the brake I'd get the clunk...

Any suggestions?

sounds similar to the problem on the wifes yaris , it was fixed by removing the pads and repacking with oem toyota grease as the grease that was in there had evaporated or was just non existent, had it done nearly a year ago and no noise since.

i took the car to two different garages , one a focus st specialist(i had a st for a while) was baffled and suggested clutch and all sorts of nonsense, the other a toyota specialist knew straight away what it was(think he said the pads was sliding about under breaking?) and fixed it within twenty mins for around £40, hers sounded like it was coming from the front right also.
Nothing is impossible when you don't know what you are talking about.

I have something very like this too! It's very noticeable for me when tapping on the brake (in a way you wouldn't normally brake). Like a clunking sound. I'm such a newb I have no idea how to troubleshoot it, but reading your post it does sound very similar.

Thanks guys - I'll pop the wheel off and reapply some ceratec...

The springs clipped into the support bracket need tweaking. Sounds like they are bent out of place allowing the pad to rattle.

This. Had something similar on a Lexus IS. Was convinced it was steering or suspension related as it was most noticeable at low speeds. Turned out to be pads moving around in the caliper.

Make sure all the little pad  spring cilps  are properly in place.  When I bought my recent mr2 it had a  clunk from the back over rough surfaces.   Someone in the past had lost one set of rear pad clips and fitted what they had left to the tops only  of each pad.  This left the bottoms to rattle and clank about over speed humps etc.  Cleaned up and  new set fitted properly all is silent now. :)

My noise has changed somewhat. Previously the clunk was felt/heard at the top of the braking foot travel, like as its first pressed and especially it tapped.

After a week away and coming back I took it out yesterday and now the clunk is at the bottom of the braking travel and only when braking harder and/or to a stop.

Not sure if this is good or bad tbh but the fact it's changed has me a little worried.

When I got my new manifold fitted a few weeks back, I asked the garage to look at it and explained the MO. They said they couldn't reproduce it and that the car was driving perfectly. Something is definitely wrong but I guess there's no point taking it back to the same place so I'm looking for a friendly Toyota specialist somewhere in SE London ish

Don't look for a 'specialist'.  The best bet is always a long-established family run garage with strong roots in the community.  Such place are always fair and of good quality.  These brakes went on a lot of different cars, and they will have seen them many times.

Having said that:  Could be a loose caliper.

Thanks Carolyn. I'd only mentioned a Toyota "specialist" because of one poster above that took it to two non-Toyota garages first and they failed to ID it. I'm pretty sure it's not specific to this car as like you imply ... brakes are brakes!

Are there any basic checks I can do (maybe with a willing friend to help) to identify if it's a loose caliper?

4 bolts to check on each side, from memory. 14mm spanner on the slider bolts. Then the caliper carrier will need a 17mm socket and should be pretty tight. I'd also check if the pad clips are installed - they are metal clips that the pad slots into top and bottom - should hold the pads in with little movement.

This turned out to be slider pins for me. They were tightened up but it's just started happening again. £17.99 on eBay for a set of 4 for the fronts. Going to fit them soon.

Interesting.. Its still on the list to get done.. along with many other things!

Ah yes, "the list". If it was on paper, it'd be more like a book :))

Also an odd suggestion but have you checked there isn't anything loose in the frunk?

Frunks all good, - plus it happens at very slow speeds (that's when I can hear/feel it). Cheers though.
