How much heat-wrap do I need?

To wrap a toyosports (1zz) manifold? And should I go with the 1" or 2" option? My heart says 2" but my head says 1".

2".  10 metres.  Get 'heavy duty'.  Some of it can be quite flimsy.

Thanks @Carolyn I'm eyeing up the DEI Titanium branded stuff.

re: the stainless zip ties ... I'm guessing I don't need the funky tool that comes with some of the kits? Pair or pliers will do just as well, right?

Pliers, big screwdriver and sharp side-cutters.

Good Tip, Stu!

Think I'll don my heavy duty work gloves

long time, no speak peeps!

I'd almost forgotten all the parts eventually arrived for my Toyosport install, so I might as well keep myself amused and start to wrap this up.... pun intended  :P

Did I hear somebody say that they wet/soak the heat wrap to make it more maleable or is that just wishful thinking?

Otherwise I think I'll be working with some mechanics gloves, pliers, screwdriver and I've got some large wire cutters that should be okay to get through this for the cutting...

My plan is to mock it up with plastic cable ties and then tighten it up with the stainless ones afterwards...

Hi Chris, you've been missed. (At least by me!).

Cut the wrap with scissors.  It will need the odd 'haircut' as you work with it.

It does conform to shape better when wet.  The cable-tie method is good.  The stainless ties are a bugger to nip through.

Do it on the bench, rather than on the car. (seems obvious, but I've known it done the other way round and that's a pig of a job to make pretty.)

It's a very satisfying little job, I find.

There should be some sort of scoring method when Chris is done so we can give him marks for effort and final output..

I wouldn't use the cheap stuff on Amazon as it will just disintegrate in no time. DEI titanium is reasonable. I used the 2"x25ft to wrap my Rogue motorsport 2ZZ header.

Yes, at £12 a roll for 10m it will be substandard! Give it 3-6 months and will have gone white and brittle and just fall of your exhaust. I'm giving you info from real world experience of the cheap Amazon stuff versus the DEI stuff. You get what you pay for in this world.

Thanks for the feedback guys - I had already bought the budget stuff - it's definitely NOT the really cheap fibreglass stuff, so I'm happy to be the Guinea Pig and see if we can save ~80% on future exhaust heatwraps...

I must say I don't like the idea of having to re-wrap it on the car, if this one does fall off, but equally, I think it was good to do my first one with something that wasn't quite as crazily priced as the DEI (~£60 with delivery).

I will be cursing this if it does all fall off in a few months, but let's hope!

Here's the attempt: single piece, no cuts - I've got steel zipties at the other end just to keep it neat, but I don't think any were actually required with a little bit of scouting/sailing tying at the end,  so  literally - no loose ends :)

Nice job!!

I use that stuff and it holds up well.  It's been on my silver car for four years -
still fine.

Thanks - it seemed to be the best value, with the most + highest ratings on Amazon, plus it seemed to be the proper Titatium-threaded heatwrap (i.e. not the really cheap fibreglass stuff).

For insurance purposes I need to declare the manifold change - I just wanted to get it to be a bit more free-revving, but I'll need to give an estimated bhp change too... is that likely to be more than 5hp? I'm guessing it will be something around that, no more?

There's no significant other supporting mods (K&N air filter and then just the TTE exhaust) - I guess the air filter might improve things a bit and the TTE won't make any difference...

I'm not going to post a picture of my wrapping job of the Zero.
I envy the big gaps between runners of your manifold. If there is a next time, I'm getting it ceramic coated instead. Worth the money haha.
What a bastard job.
I used one 10m roll
...neutiquam erro.

FYI - 2" x 10 metres was enough for me to do, including doubling up on the two thicker pipes and around the joins... I did ~50% overlap for anything that would be visible afterwards, probably ~20% overlap when I was going DOWN the areas that I needed to wrap back up...

Tools needed:
GLOVES!!! (rubber mechanics gloves were okay) - do NOT attempt this without them!!
pliers - just for pulling the last knot tight
wirecutters for snipping the cable ties (squeeze and fold back and forth)
heavy scissors for cutting the last bit of wrap off - I think I only has a few inches unused

Not really untill you change the main cat/ rear muffler.

Sounds a wee bit crisper as the pre-cats do ´muffle´ a bit but the two big wans are the real restriction.
On a sports cat / decat midpipe, the TTE will become the main hold up for the exhaust gasses.

... yep, the TTE is on the car 95% for the accoustics and 5% for the looks... 0% for performance - I'm not under any illusions about that one!

Thanks... more or less as I thought on the rest of it too, now lets hope LVE believe me :)

With a ´sports´ filter and a swap of the OEM elbow, the intake will be a bit more roarty too. Especially the OEM horn is a very effective sound reducer. The soft material insulated duct inside the mudguard does the rest.
Plenty of cheap 45 elbows in the correct size and the deduct is for free.

I've had PiperX Viper in a previous car and the induction noise was OTT, the odd bit of burble and crackle is nice, but a blaring horn every time you rev it out and the constant drone are a bit much...

Mine has the standard air box but with a non restricted horn and a deduct. - Photos now in the Southern Belle thread.
The exhaust is .... open with an Arrow motorbike muffler.
As you can hear in the mp3 track it ríps when revving.
It is rumbling when pussyfooting* and produces only the very odd overrun bang, although I cán provoke those if and when I would want.

* had a pair of motorcycle Guardia Civil Trafico behind/next to the car twíce. Ogling like lions a zevra but after hanging about pulled away into yonder. Can´t be too bad can it?! I mean those are THÉ bad boys and they were on the hunt: the one time, just a few kms on they díd stop a car.

Exáctly so what more proof do you need that the exhaust cán be inoffensive ;-)
