service / malfunction light

newbie question but can someone clarify...

the light on my W plate pride and joy has come on. the manual says 'Take it to a Toyota dealer'. the light is the one that looks like an engine block - question(s) is/are!:

a. is this also the 'Service required' Indicator light ?
b. does this get tripped by mileage OR time?

The light has come on at 39,300 'ish / 5 yrs...

That light is not a service light it is a 'check engine' light, take it to Toyota asap, it may be nothing more that a loose wire to the o2 sensor - but there again it could be more

If you are near a garage / Kwik-Fit type place they should have an OBD-II reader and will probably read the code for free, at least this way you can go to Toyota armed with the code and it's meaning, it will help with diagnostics if nothing else  s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

As above: Its the Check Engine Light, or "CEL" for short.

The MR2 does not have service reminder lights that need to be reset each time you have an oil change, but it does have a very advanced diagnostic system that detects any problems with the car. If it detects a fault in one of several systems, then it falgs up the fault to you by lighting up the CEL, and stores a snapshot of what the car was doing at the time the fault came up... If you connect a reader to the cars OBDII port (thats short On Board Diagnostics) the ECU will send out a code, you look up the code in the manuals, and read off what it means...

There are hundreds of codes, for hundreds of different types of fault, and all will bring up a CEL.  The only way to tell what the problem actually is, is to have the codes read off. I have a device to do this, as do several other members, and just about any garage can do it for a nominal charge.

First things first though... You havent just left the fuel cap loose have you? This seems to be the No.1 cause of CEL's..
