Sticky caliper now!

So just as we think we are getting there, Sapphire now has an osf sticky caliper. The alloy is showing masses of brake dust opposed to the other 3 that are clean. Old cars, eh? I've now spent the money I got for Foxy on buying & repairing Sapphire! What do you expect on a 21yr old, cheaper than having a child I suppose! :o

It's getting pretty obvious that we're all in "replace with new" or complete refurbish territory now.
The parts are just worn and done.

Mine's a "young" 05 plate, putting it at the same age as our eldest teenager, with 105k miles and it has a bit of a list of things to do now.

A sticky calliper is not a massive issue, Jane.  Very often it's just a matter of lubricating the sliders.  I figured it would be a front, as the rears are new!

The fronts are very easy to deal with, as there's no handbrake involved.

Yes, we ARE in 'Classic Car' territory with these cars now.  Which means being very thorough when we do a job. If you're freeing off one front calliper - do them both at the same time.

Mind you, if the hard tops are any indication, we have crossed the threshold from 'old car' to 'desirable classic', so the money spent will now start to be reflected in market value.

One one of these cars is 'sorted', good regular maintenance and rust prevention will be all it needs.

Give it a couple more years and we'll start to see the expenditure reflected in prices.  The biggest killer will be a rusty underside.

Sorry to say this, just get rid and buy a good MR2

As I'm a gentleman, you can have mine for £500, it comes complete with a £3500 hardtop :))

Joking Jane, sticking caliper is generally an easy fix

If it is one of the rears check the brake cable. I had it where the cable was not retracing all the way and was at the point of bing frozen. It produced brake dust on that wheel and drag. 
On my previous Honda the caliper was bad and needed to be replaced. Every situation is always a surprise and needs to be diagnosed.

Its not the sliders it is the piston sticking. I pumped it out and pushed it back a few times but it is stiff to go back in. Cheap enough easy fix thankfully.

One of mine was stiff when I had the discs and pads replaced, the garage moved it to get the new disc fitted but that was all, I would of been much happier if the garage had said we need to do some work on the caliper/calipers and its going to cost you.

Would it be worth getting in touch with Andy at J-spec to see if he had a set of front and backs for sale that I could restore at my leisure ? and after restoring paint red :)

Indeed, a garage allows the job to be paced, irrespective of the weather. Unfortunately it doesn't help with the number of years of the operative but it does stop it becoming a spectator sport!

As per my post earlier; don't delay the inevitable Jane. Refurb kit or replacement caliper.

Refurb kits are about 30gbp

Sapphire is yet at another garage today, this time in Ilminster having a new OSF caliper fitted.  Driving the 60 miles over to Mums this morning, the poor disc was red hot when I arrived. :o  I do hope this is the last of Sapphire's problems for a while now.  She seems to have been up on a ramp more than being driven these days :'(

Sapphire is now waiting for an osf new caliper which will be fitted on Mon/Tues so as I'm in Somerset I shall be returning to Salisbury tomorrow in my Mum's Mazda 2 auto.  Shame, as I was looking forward to the drive home in Sapphy tomorrow pm. :'(

My old car failed its MOT on the handbrake last week (for a change).  Rear calipers were brand new from Brakes International in 2018 and the handbrake cables were most recently replaced in 2019 I think. I've seen others mention premature failure from the Brakes International ones.

The calipers from Simon Sinclair / caliperrefurb.com seem to get a good write up and are reasonably priced.

I have never come across that.
Was that on here or elsewhere?
Do they elaborate as to what fails?
