high idle revs

dont know if this is suppost to happen.  never noticed it on any previous cars that i have owned as much as this, but when i start up the engine from cold, it revs at anywhere between 1500 and 2000 revs.  i know this is the choke but this happens even on warm days. it normally drops to about 750 revs when engine temp rises. is it that i am just noticing it more becuse the engine noise is louder than my other cars?
Also i have noticed that when the engine is warmed up (normally hovers around the middle of the gauge) and i pull up to a junction with foot off the accelerator, the idle speed can be erratic.  it isnt majoy erraticness (not sure if that is a word)  can go up to just over 1000 revs and down to about 600 revs (makes the car vibrate a bit when it gets low).
Does anyone else experience this?

Any help would be much appreciated

First port of call is to clean the MAF, personally I don't think Toyota ever clean this as part of a service and it's the most likely cause of your problem. Search the Maintenance forum for more info.

You think that's high? My prev 4A-GE used to idle above 3000rpm when cold  s:lol:  s:lol:
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Mine does this also, one of the first things I noticed about the car.

My parents recently got a brand new Celica 140 and it does exactly the same thing.
Just an engine characteristic I presume.

My 2 is at MrT today to get the usual niggles sorted mostly under warranty. I too have experienced the same eratic idling and is one of the things I have asked them to look at.  (Last service was only 2.5k ago as has <10k on the odo). I also cleaned MAF and used a fuel additive  - did run a bit smoother, but idle still seems to have a bit of a mind of its own.  From the threads above - sounds like a common charicteristic/ the norm, but I'll let you know the verdict from Mr T.

Same for me as well.

TBH I have noticed the "warm up" idle increased by between 300 - 500rpm after the Unichip was fitted. I don't think it weas anything to do with the tuning because that is supposed to be "full throttle" only.

Had its service about 6 weeks ago, must admit I didn't mention it, and came out the same.

thanks everyone.

glad to know it obviously isnt a major issue if quite a few others are having it.  Will clean the MAF anyway.  Last owner didnt know much (if anything) about maintenance.  Think it was bought mainly for looks and not for all the other outstanding attributes that it has as well.

Thanks again   s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D

As suspected,  Mr T has just concurred ... all is in within normal range. It's just character then... Plus if revs drop a little low and the car shakes a bit - Just an excuse to blip the throttle!  s:) :) s:)

just cleaned my MAF sensor (was very dirty) and reset ECU.  Immediate noticable improvement.  Would recommend this to everyone.  5mins for the MAF sensor max.

Thanks for everybody's help     s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:    s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:
