East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of
Emergency ( ICE ) " campaign with the support of Falklands war hero
Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone
Address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency".

In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be
able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact
them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do

Please will you also email this to everybody in your address book, it
won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this. It
really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.

For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc

That's a really good idea!!! kind of surprising no-ones thought of something similar before!   s:) :) s:)

I'd wonder about whether the average paramedic/fireman/policeman etc would know about it though, I wonder how much they're publicising it...?

Nice to see a chain-email that is both authentic and useful.

Only one very very small problem with this...

If you store the same number under 2 different names on your phone, then it wont display that persons name when they call you, just their number. The caller display function only works if the number matches one name in the phones memory.

Add a * to the end of you ICE number to restore this function.

Other than that little glitch, its a brilliant idea.

Will it still work with a * at the end?

What about doing a +44number instead of 0?

Mobiles usually only match on the trailing 'n' digits (old Nokias used to be the last 7 digits, IIRC), so +44 and 0 at the start are treated the same (certainly on my mobile)
