Hi everyone, im new to this website and i have only had my 2002 balck roadster for a few months but although i love it to bots, after reading a post on re-fixing soft top straps i'm stumped! I can find the strap with a popper on and a yellow warning label but i can't for the life of me find  another popper/place to attach it to! I've looked inside the canvass roof area and outside but nothing. any ideas on how to help this plonker find the other aprt to the strap?

not too sure, I found the long strap fed it through clipped it to the smaller strap, and i still got ears, so im currently just living with them   s:? :? s:?

Did you loop it round the frame though?

I did the same as you when I found mine had come adrift and just popped them together without going round the frame, this still left it with ears, after putting them round the frame I found that the poppers were a bit weak and kept parting (even with the velcro assistance) all I did then was to crimp the female part of the popper slightly and I've had no bother since.

I think i need a top strap kit too.

You guys clipped it on for me at the treasure hunt (while I was conviniently distracted) so im not 100% sure what I have to do, *stick my arm in the roof it looked like  s:) :) s:)

Anyway you put it on, it was off again within literaly a day.   s:( :( s:(

i tried doing Ekona's on the same day and we noticed the same problem, if you look in the kit you'll notice some new clip points, you need to get these put in, as they are a slightly smaller than the stock ones and hence cause the strap on its own to pop off. A decent trim shop should be able to help,

for you Phil i'd try the soft top place in chessington, they should be able to help  s:wink:  s:wink:

Wow! what a fast response. Everyone is talking about clipping one popper to another but i cant find anything to attach the popper that goes round the frame to. I might take it down to Sims Toyota in northampton as they have been very godd on previous viists, maybe i can have a look at the MR2 in the showroom to figure out where the other popper is located.

I assume you have seen this:

Has some pics showing you where the poppers are. It is possible you haven't got a top strap, you can get a replacement from Argiope on Spyderchat. Or I have my old one somewhere.

I know know the problem...... the strap about 1 1/2 inches wide that runs through the roof from one side to the other isn't there. ive ordered the part from toyota so that should solve the problem!!!!!!

At least I'm not the only one now - mine was exactly the same.. Presumably the strap came unpoppered on the previous owner and they (or, more likely, Toyota) removed a 'useless' bit of 'dangling' extra material..

how much is it out of interest, my mates just bought himself an mr2 and i was telling him how easy it was to fix after doing mine and he is also missing the long strap that goes across the top.   s:D :D s:D

If you are buying one i suggest you give Agriope a email / PM. for his current price. I am sure it will be MUCH less than MrT, and a better job to boot. He's a very helpful and genuine guy. His details are in this post which will also give you a lot of info about the job in hand

Im going to try to emulate the "Mark fix with my current straps" before I consider the strap kit.

Thought i had bought the long strap that goes from one side of the roof to the other but when i went to collect it from Mr T it was a reel of sticky tape!!!! the parts guy does not know what the part no of this strap is even thought it's fitted to the demonstrator in the showroom. I can't win can i.............unless i go to another Toyota garage and swipe the one from the showroom!

Buy Agriope's.

Got to be less than MrT and it will sort out any ear problems   s:wink:  s:wink:

lol

I refited my existing straps (after about 3 lazy weeks of leaving it flapping)

So they work OK but its fairly loose and with some ears  s:lol:  s:lol:  .

I know Mark cable tied his and im thinking of doing this also, question is should I tighten the strap as well in the process ?

Is that what the topstrap kit does?   if so by how much ?

Many thanks,
Phil

Sorry to drag an old post up   s:oops:  s:oops:

As I was cleaning out my (flooded) luggage bins, I found a strap.

I believe this could be the one to stop the top folding to have ears. I've got the poppers loose on both sides, as per the original poster, with nothing to attach them to in the roof.

The strap is 2.8cm wide and 97cm long - does this sound right?

If so, how would I go about fitting it back in to stop the annoying ears?

Cheers all

After reading that article I'm pretty sure this is the strap that is sometimes only connected at one end!

Trouble is, I have it here in the office with me! Will have to try and thread it back through the hood and connect it up at both ends.

Cheers

I found using a bamboo cane with one end of the strap sellotaped to one end of the cane, pushing the cane through and pulling the strap behind it worked a treat...didn't have a spare pair of helping hands at the time!   s:wink:  s:wink:
