Car smashed 2 days after having TTE exhaust fitted.

I just bought my 2 a couple of weeks ago, and just had the TTE exhausts fitted, which i was very impressed with!.

Unfortunatly two days later, I was driving down the M5 when the traffic came to an abrupt halt, i slammed my brakes and stopped with about 2 metres in distance between the car in front and me.  

Unfortunatly the guy behind managed to demonstrate to me what it feels like to be taken from behind by a corsa!.  Quite simply i said to the copper, that it was very painful!.



My car has just been taken to the repair centre all courtesy of Adrian Flux, although i am a bit concerned as the driver of the repair centre lorry seemed to think that my new exhaust system was only just the pipes.  I tried to explain to him that it was a complete new system fitted by Toyota, which seemed to go in one ear and out the other.

I just hope that they repair everything!.  

Do you guys have any recommendations on what i can check to ensure everything has been repaired correctly, assuming it will be repaired that is.  When i had a quick look in the engine bay, it seemed as though a piece of metal which sits over the exhaust bit was bent in and i imagine the back box was also knackered as well as some kind of pin which sits behind the rear bumper seems to be bent.[/img]

Thats terrible, sorry for you mate.

Demonstrates yet again how good the brakes are on the 2 compared to other cars!

2 owners should be able to do 10 mph over the speed limit all the time, as most accidents seem to involve someone hitting from behind.

Gutted for you, as the duels looked nice!

Sorry to see/hear what has happened to you, when I was rear ended by a Fiesta the damage took out near enough the whole nearside at the back and it was repaired - you will have no problems with that damage.

I wouldn't take any notice of the lorry driver, he probably has nothing to do with the fixing up of your car.

As Craig said the brakes on these are brilliant, if you put them on hard no one behind you with lesser brakes stands a chance.

I hate those stupid people: can't they just THINK of their car's ability to brake? I mean, come on, it is NOT possible a Corsa, Nova or Astra (and most of the others, actually!) can brake harder than a "sport car". I can't believe it when I see a saloon closely following a Carrera...

I sometime see people getting between me and the car in front where there is less space they might need for parallel parking (ok, some are really bad at it too  s:twisted: :twisted: s:twisted:  ).

our licence plates should indicate how long it takes to brake from 60 to 0 (by color, for instance)  s:lol: :lol: s:lol:  

no, seriously, maybe they'd understand that following at 5m is suicide because we brake 10m shorter!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I'm sure it will repair okay.

On a lighter note:
The thing I would check when I got it back would be the TTE alignment if MrT is doing it. It may look even worse than in your picture  s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

Not too sure you can group all cars together - our Astra Coupe Cabby has seriously good all round disk brakes! and its only an Astra!  Come to think of it the 300mm disks on our ST are pretty good stoppers and thats only a focus.  But I agree as a general point.

Thats bad luck, look(s)ed nice as well, very tempted to get the upgraded exhausts when i can afford it, but NOT if they become Corsa magnets!

My Astra Coupe had good brakes as well, but the standard Astras are much worse, proved by the guy that hit me up the back, got out of his car and said "hmmm, your car stops quickly!" DOH. Still his was red, mine was red, and i only needed a bit of t-cut.

reading between the lines on his first thread, then i would imagine that his dealer fitted it, as it's (was!) a tte dual...

the bent bit of metal over the backbox is just a heatshield, and should get replaced along with all the other bits i guess..

Thanks for all your support and comments guys.  Car is at the repair centre now being repaired, so i will be driving my Golf GT TDI for at least a few more weeks.

It has to be said though, that i am really missing the '2 at the moment.  I keep opening all the windows in the golf in an attempt to simulate the roof down effect ;(

To answer a few questions about my recently deceased TTE exhausts.

I had them dealer fitted, only bought the car a few weeks before i had exhausts fitted and i managed to get a good deal on them.

Man   s:( :( s:(   thats a sorry picture!!! Hope everything is sorted out quickly and to the highest quality!! I have had the TTE fitted a couple of months ago and added it to the insurance only to be told that it went up 120quid and if its damaged in an accident im only covered to get a stock one put back on   s:( :( s:(   so i always get nevous when i have to break hard!!

You might not want to make a Personal Injury claim against the other driver, but these things have a habit of coming to the surface in a few months time. You definitely don't want the other guy's insurance company to close their book on it, especially with your sign off of the car repair. There would be no way back after that if something did flare up.

Yes thats what they all do. A driver at work had a small (and I mean small) collision with another vehicle. It looked like somebody had opened their door too vigourously in a car park and caught the adjacent stationery vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle is now claiming thats he's self employed and been unable to work, with numerous offers of work, which due to his "injury" he has had to decline, and is claiming £25 per hour lost revenue!

I'm not saying that mokeyb is doing the same thing. You can clearly see that he's had a whack up the rear. But only claim if there is a genuine injury.

Thanks for input.

No i did not enjoy sitting in A&E for 4 hours.  

I have had whiplash before but not like this.  I hit my head quite hard on the seat which surprising hurt seeing as its usually so comfy!.

I couldn't move my neck after the accident with a constant headache, which made me go to A&E the first time.  

Then when we got back after the doctor saying you have whiplash i bent under my car to inspect the damage only to have strange fluid start pouring out of my nose when i tilted my head upside down.  It was very strange! it also worrying looked like cerebral fluid according to the nurse (missus) which ofcause didn't make me very calm!.  So ofcause i got back into the car and headed back to A&E.

I have initiated a claim through my solicitors which Adrian Flux all initiated although im not taking the michael with it and claiming loss of earnings or anything, im just saying what happened and what symptons i am still suffering from.  

If i get any compensation then great but im not holding my breathe.  

I am happy that we were both ok, could have been a lot worse. Im also happy that my lovely '2 is coming home from its holidays shortly.  I have spent so many hours on this forum since my car went away and looking at all your great cars just makes me want it back even more!.

I have even started planning my first mod's.  Sun visors are coming straight off i think!.

The problem is that they do think. They think that it's a great idea to get little closer to see the car better.

And even if they had superior brakes which stop the car at 0m when you touch the pedal, they have already hit the car in front before they even react to the braking  s:? :? s:?


Have to admit it sometimes scares me to see someone trying to touch my rear bumper (I think that's what they are trying, cause there's no other reason to drive so close). If I had to brake, he'd hit me before he even realized I hit the brakes. I found that a best way to get rid of those is to slow down more and more when someone gets too close. They either pass or leave more space inbetween. I may have to slow down several times, but eventually they get the point.
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.
