Exhaust heat shield?  There are two and they can rattle something terrible.  There are pictures on here somewhere.

Hard to tell without hearing it/seeing it, but a vibration induced resonance/rattle does seem to point towards something like a loose heatshield. This resonance could well be exacerbated by the induction kit, which would also fit with your symptoms Leon.

As with Barney, heatshield would be my first choice (and i don't have a second choice!!**), but the only way to know for sure is getcher head in there  s:wink:  s:wink:

** actually, my second choice would be induction kit rubbing against the metal plate to the side/rear of the engine bay, but if the noise was already there before Pipercross, I doubt it!

Does it change pitch as you rev the engine up?

If so, it could be a belt, a tensioner or even the alternator.

Richie.

i dont think its the aulternator, as they squeek dont they. it does sound like its running tho, so maybe a belt. but what belt near the air filter.. also it is loud when you start. in cold, then gets quieter. but remains on lower revs and when stationary. but my car is loud above 3-4k so cant notice it.

do you think toyota would tell me, been as they are investigating today? for free?

When you hear that squealing sound, it is the fan belt slipping against the pulley on the alternator. you normally find this worse when the battery voltage is lower (ie on cold mornings or when you have a load on such as headlights, fans, ac etc). This is because there is a greater load on the alternator as it is required to work harder.

I was more meaning that your noise could be caused by the fan belt hitting off of something / rubbing off of something.

I would love to be of more help, however my '2s been away for about 5 weeks now and i only ever had it for 2 days, so i cant remeber specifically what else is next to the air box.

Good luck on getting it fixed - i hope it doesnt cost you too much to sort!
