Hear ye hear ye!

The esteemed Sir Dick Sloan hath brought to mine attention (via the method of carrier-Facebook) great news from the East.

It is news of the arrival of ELMScan Toyota, King of the Diagnostic Realm and ruler of the Toyota Kingdom.

No longer will our people live in blessed ignorance of their failing OCV or VVT functionality. No longer will we be plagued with mechanical elimination of potential failed components to trace a running issue.

PEOPLE REJOICE! For a mere shilling you can obtain this Android application to complement your OBD2 dongle (as long as it's not the temperamental ELM 327 V2.1 cheap type and a world of diagnostic power will open to you.

View and graph all your fuel trims, o2 sensor readings, MAF, coolant temp, fuel flow, VVT angle, fuel status, and status of almost every component in the engine bay.

Run live checks (be careful with this) such as switching on/off valves to test them, increase fuel duty.

Get it!
Will try to post video

Nice, thanks for sharing. Been wanting something like this to finally figure out my P1349 which has been going crazy since I (don't ask) uninstalled my turbo again a couple of weeks ago. Torque doesn't have all the great diagnostic features, so lots of delivering 12V over terminals to find my OCV is still perfectly fine would no longer be required   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

£4.36 on Play Store. Demo version doesn't run active tests or allow the clearing of codes, so worth going for full fat straight out of the box if you want to be able to do anything useful.

Interesting, what can it do over and above the Torque Pro? Guessing the actuation of various valves and diagostics etc?

I just went for full fat just in case it turns out it broke some rules and Toyota pulled it.
There's a very good chance that Toyota didn't sanction this and someone spent years reverse engineering techstream.

Frankly, it's worth the 4.36 in any case. It's not gimmicky at all. In fact the interface is dreadful.
If your obd2 dongle isn't compatible then I'd say it's worth getting another one just for this.
I've ordered an OBDLink LX as I have the exact kind that tends not to work with this. Although I did get lucky and it connected.

Basically that. And the consumption calculations seem to be scarily accurate, unlike Torque. Response time isn't any quicker, so that's just a limitation of the Denso ecu and we'll have to deal (I think)
But overall I'd say torque for display purposes and general logging and ELMScan for engine mechanical diagnosis

I think someone did mention that it finds the JOBD protocol. Don't quote me.

It's got a very simple almost "brute force" way of finding the ecu (via a dedicated ECU Finder function).
It looks across protocols ISO-14230, ISO-9141, across two different baud rates (9600 and 10400,which is where JOBD comes in I think), and every single hexadecimal address from 00 to FF.

The MR2 listens on ISO-9141-5 2 on TorquePro.

Looked it up.  Says it does for American, European and Japanese markets....

Does this make me the guinea -pig?

Little video. At the end you can see me trigger 89% IACV duty and the revs go to 2700+ before I drag it back down to a smaller than required duty, dropping the revs to 940+,ans then I turn the override off and the idle returns to a managed 1600 cold idle.

I also tinker a bit with fueling and you can see the short term fuel trims change.

Cheers for that will take a look later. Playstore says the app was last updated 27 May 2015, can't believe it's been about so long and we only just found out about it... also must've been under Toyota's radar.

Couldn't get this to connect to ECU with my old chinese bluetooth obd2 scanner - even though it works fine with Torque Pro. I bought a new, but pretty much identical bluetooth scanner and it connected up first time  :D

Has anyone tried any of the active tests? I was hoping to try the 'VVT Control Bank 2' active test as mentioned previously, but it (and everything else I tried) just flips on and instantly off again.

When I do the vvt test the engine instantly stalls.
Might still be the obd2 plug. It's really picky..

Assumed it might have still been that. What specific reader do you have, maybe I should get the same one?

I was probably doing it wrong but I don't think the tests did much on mine. Blissfully ignorant either way

Likely my adaptor at fault as it is a cheapo one although it connects Ok. Have to say I noticed the demo connected to the cheap one straight away whereas the full version required more persuasion.

I have an OBDLINK LX. The green cheapest one.
I got a relative to bring one over from the US as they're 35USD and somehow that translates to 75GBP....

I have to say though, I have had absolutely zero connectivity issues. No more drop-outs, connects immediately and has a wider range of supported functionality. Also being able to leave it plugged in due to its power saving mode is a bonus.

So I can definitely recommend the OBDLINK

Reviews do seem to point out that is better than mine. Definitely not paying £75 though, I'll just have to make do without being able to run the tests :)

Patrick - does your expensive one show any ABS reset/purge options?

It does indeed. Does the lot. In fact, the OBDLINK software also has Toyota-specific commands you can buy for a few quid in the app.

Bossworld

Hmm I'll reconnect mine and see if the ABS stuff appears.

Bossworld

@shnazzle so just checking, you have more options than this? Thanks

Screenshot has come through a bit poop but which setting is it? I'll have a look tomorrow

Which ecu are you connected to?
...neutiquam erro.

Bossworld

Attached the thumbnail, sorry crap Android tablet, should be able to click for a larger copy.

I believe the main ECU, though that might explain the lack of further options. Was hoping to find an ABS bleed option/utility as I know it exists in techstream

The ABS has a separate ecu that you need to connect to. It's in the list. Should have more success there
