Just about to start on the underneath, here's a few picces  :)
Any hints or advice welcome, I have some Bilt deox gel on order but am about to start with the wire brush.
Once I have it as clean as I can I intend to paint black, any thoughts on a best paint for the job?
Believe at sometime in the not to distant future I will be investing in a new sump  :-\

I just use hammerite, but I am seriously considering trying plastidip as it will be totally water proof. I tried it on a little area last month, so Im gonna check in few months as to how it held up.

If you use plastidip, and it isnt to you liking after a year or whatever, is it possible to simply paint over it with Hammerite?  Or must you peel it all off first?

Well it's  like a rubber skin so I don't think it will take paint, the plus side is it peels off relatively easy(off plastic at least). But as it's a rubber it should in theory be totally water proof, so in my mind that would stop future rust.

How about hammerite followed by a coat of plastdip? Would it stick to the hammerite for the best of both worlds?

Rustoleum is fantastic. Hammerite is OK. Plastidip is no.

Rustoleum primer then black rustoleum is the best.

If you want to put anything on top after -  use something like waxoyl.

Wirebrushing using a knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder is 100 times more effective too - bare metal in seconds!

I'm a bit concerned that if (when) I need to renew the paint in a year or so, if it were plastidip I would have to remove it all first -unless I wanted to pastidip it again?  Its bad enough haveing to get the rust off, I not ure I want to have a surface that won't take paint.

When protecting metal from corrosion, the better the bond the better the protection. Plastidip obviously doesn't bond very well compared to a good paint,  and runs more of a risk of trapping in moisture between the metal and the coating, and causing corrosion.

In industrial environments i've seen untreated steel box section just coated with rustoleum and last a decade inside and out and still look brand new... Even after being hit with a forktruck often the paint coating has often survived!

wotugonado

Well its a bit of an experiment, like I said I'll look at the area I sprayed in a few months and see how it held up.

Starting to see results under the car listening to queen, most of the flaky stuff has gone, seeing bare metal in parts, looks like some of the suspension still has plastic on.
I'm just wondering, will the Bilt deox gel work well enough to penetrate down to the metal from the following picture? The rust left seems to just be shiny now and no more rusty coloured dust coming off of it   (:< >:)

Thats metal showing through already?  The Bilt gloop will eat through the crap pretty well, though you might need to do two coats -I did!. Great progress matey!

Listening to the Queen?  I though she only talked at Christmas or to the parents on Open day at Parliament...

Thanks for all the info Frogger, Mr Two and Wotugonado, I'm off the ramps now until next weekend when armed with gloop I hope to carry on.
Also need time to download more Christmas speech podcasts ;)

Currently researching which Rust-Oleum to go for, need some I can paint on both Primer and paint. Can only find sprays ATM :/

Search "combiprimer" and "combicolor" (note american spellings) for primer and top coats as normal paints... they don't help themselves much with easily searchable names!  Ebay usually has some.

Garfy

Both bought on tools paint.com 750ml primer & 1L top coat 32 squid delivered, hopefully more than enough for when I get under the front as well  :)

I like combicolour in fact I repainted my whole campervan in it, by hand!

It contains fish oil apparently to help resist the rust. Nice that you can clean/ thin it with white spirit rather than having to buy a specific cleaner like for hammerite as I recall.

The Other Stu

Interesting. I'm looking at taking the week off and taking off a considerably number of bars and braces off my car - they've mostly been off recently, so I know that they'll come off.

Things like suspension, ARB, braces etc.
Strip them right down and properly repaint them all, then get the car Geo'd.

Garfy

I'm only allowed a week off at Christmas  :'(
And with no tools etc and a set of borrowed ramps I'm doing what I can.
Spent 6 hours cleaning the best I can, now Bilt Hamber stuff, may need two coats of that  (:< >:)
Got the primer and paint on order to finish off what I've managed to clean up.
Building up all my bits for the suspension refresh, hopefully July if I can afford the garage fees.
A weeks driving then the GEO thingymabob and do it all again in 5 years.
Is that how it goes?  :D
