Hi folks, I'm about to carry out a 2zz conversion and have been offered a corolla compression supercharger with it. Are they any good?

shnazzle

Very!
It's a supercharger on a great engine and drives smooth as could be.
Dick Sloan said it's the best one yet that he's had.

But... It doesn't fit.
You need to either cut a hole in the rear firewall or "massage" it
...neutiquam erro.

michaelb

Cheers, that's weird that it doesn't fit! Considering it was made for the engine by Toyota! Lol

shnazzle

Haha yes but remember the engine has to go in the mr2 backwards. The compressor was designed to sit at the front of the car near the radiator where there's plenty space. Not against the rear firewall :)
...neutiquam erro.

michaelb

Ah, I see! I assume a competent race tuning company should be able to make it fit ok though?!

shnazzle

Absolutely. Anybody with a bit of sense, a cutter and a welder. After that it's just a 2zz conversion install really.

Rogue Motorsport have done it. Woodsport in Durham can easily do it
...neutiquam erro.

Ok, cool!

How much is it costing you and how much power do you want to make?
They're fine to add some much needed torque to the mid range but not the ultimate top end power.
Remember many have had hard lives and could possibly need some TLC.
Also they don't have any form of cooler do they?

As a stock 2zz is capable of making well over 300bhp with forced induction I would look elsewhere unless it was coming my way for a good price.

1zz turbo is easier and faster.
Make sure stage two cams are for forced induction not NA.

It's a good price.

Not really sure a 1zz turbo is easier mate, having to source all the parts is annoying! This is available to me right now, would be shipped to my guy and he will install and map it! That's pretty easy for me! Lol

Source a few parts from the internet and get them fitted and make 209 @ the wheels or swap in a secondhand engine and supercharger that has a quoted 215 and 158 @ the crank I know which one I would choose but then I like torque and not reving the nuts off an engine so the 2zz isn't my idea of a good time.

Also what ECU are you going to use?
He can't map a 2zz ECU.

Link or EMU Black. I told him about our EMU deal and he said he could match it with a link if I'm getting him to carry out the work. He's a link dealer

Any idea which Link?
They're all good its just tbh the atom or the monsoon aren't as good as the Ecumaster black.

I wish you all the best with it but the last person who tried 2zz compressor ended up selling it on and going rotrex because they weren't happy. That was with link storm smaller pulley and water meth.

I would just keep it stock 2zz compressor if you want to mod it go turbo or rotrex.
Much better gains.

Do you have a power goal in mind?

Not sure which ecu, but whatever is needed really. I don't really have any particular power gains in mind to be honest, just looking for more! I know I could probably get close to 250 without a supercharger or turbo, just with cams and a few other mechanical mods. The opinion on this supercharger seems very conflicting! Some saying great, some saying wouldn't touch with a barge pole! I also found this https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F113150702868

Which I'm considering instead

Do you think I'd be better just getting the conversion with the stage 2 cams and remapped?

shnazzle

Highest power build for naturally ASPIRATED, I am reliably told, is one MWR has built. I don't know the spec but I can only imagine it's VERY expensive. It runs about 230 at the flywheel. Same as a decent small turbo setup.
So if that's what you want, it's definitely achievable, but prepare to spend 10k+. Can be done over time I guess.

2zz Corolla + supercharger is a great setup with a good bit of usable power. The SC really adds that low-down torque we miss. It's sub-200hp I think but apparently feels faster than a similar turbo.
It's a stock system on the Corolla supercharged version so you know it's going to be smooth. Yeah you can to standalone but as it's a stock system, you can use the stock Corolla ecu alongside your mr2 one.

1zz+turbo will see you higher power and easier future upgrades. Bigger turbo and more cooling easily sees you to 300hp. But then you're really pushing the limits of the block and gearbox so after that the costs spiral.

I think you'd be very pleased with the link+2zz+sc kit.
It should feel factory.

...neutiquam erro.

michaelb

2zz plus supercharger makes 220hp, with the standalone ecu and upgraded cams, it should do a bit better and you can control when the lift comes in a lot better too. I think 4k is a great deal, so I think I'll have to go for it mate!

1979scotte

We all have different ideas I think 4k for 220 bhp is mucho deniro when a secondhand 1zz turbo kit will make similar power for 2k.

It's all personal I've spent thousands on a supercharged V6 that doesn't work and won't make any more power than a serious 1zz turbo when it does finally work but will make loads of torque without killing itself. Hopefully.

If you'll be happy with 220 all will be well but the supercharger itself doesn't really want to work too much harder than it is already.
You can always upgrade to a turbo in future if you want more go.

Enjoy it. I just like people to be aware of the options and possible drawbacks.

Make sure your mate does a pucker job on the manifold and exhaust 2zz needs to breathe easy.

It's a race tuning company I'm using to do the install so they should know their way around! I could hold off on the supercharger and install a normal turbo at a later date with just doing the conversion and cams now + the ecu. I would think that should give me an adequate increase on the normal 1zz setup?

When I had mine fitted Rogue had a compressor for sale. Both Matt and Patrick advised against it as in their opinion lt only does the same as the stage 2 cams, ie. Fill in the midrange. This may of course be different with a standalone ecu BUT I know mine made more power the D1cks.

Your choice really. Lee at se7en should be able to give you all the numbers.

New little car to follow soon

Ex 2zz by Rogue. Se7en cams. BMC CDA. Competion clutches lightened flywheel, Megillian Racing Exhaust. TRD sportivo suspension and ARB\'s. TRD braces. TRD quick shift. TRD dash kit, Matts brace. Getting there but not sure when it will stop!

michaelb

Yeah but I want to know what the supercharger plus the stage 2 cams plus the ecu can do lol Lee thinks the compressor supercharger is crap, but others think different!

The Toyota supercharger is very limited is not an opinion it's a fact.
They made a supercharger for the 1mz V6 and in the same vain it's fine for an extra 50bhp but no more.
They get too hot and there is no cheap or easy method of cooling except water meth which isn't a day to day option IMHO.

Go for 2zz cams and standalone if you want more power you can add it later.
