Then I shall bring it!

Maybe we could get some ear plugs for Marks neighbours?  s:lol:  s:lol:

Good luck with getting your P/S fixed Liz...

Roger, it will be interesting to see the difference between yours and mine. The only difference in set up is the exhaust. Mine is a TTE and yours in the H&S.

Will be cool to see(hear) the differences between them!

Try Westfield Motors at Rayleigh - 01268-783205 - they deal mainly with Toyota and are a good garage...

well i put my penetrating oil on yesterday and this morning had something that resembled a traction engine  s:shock:  s:shock:  , the smoke was everywhere, i let it run for 10 minutes, whilst standing around with a fire extinguisher, wandering if the things going to burst into flames  s:? :? s:?   even after most of it had gone people were still flashing me as i drove down the road, so just a word of warning, be ready for this and give yourself a bit extra time to allow the smoke to dissapate, probably 20 - 25mins on tickover

Does the cessation of the smoke mean you've burned off all the penetrating oil?

Should we perhaps apply it and not drive the car for a day?

kanujunkie

#112
very possible, problem is, is i need the car every day between now and then  s:? :? s:?  i'll bring the spray along with me on the day as spray it up as soon as its cooled enough, i'll also try the bolts later as well and see if i can loosen the ones i can get to/see

Yup, done that with both penetrating, and WD40 (pre-H&S and pre-catgut).   Never worried too much about it smoking lots  s:) :) s:)   Was worth it to make the cat gut easier.

wasn't too worried about the smoke, more about the risk of fire, i'm gonna respray em again tonight before i go to bed as i've re-arranged tomorrow and can now do everything by train, now that'll be a shock  s:shock:  s:shock:

Did it lots, and never got any flames  s:) :) s:)

Motor oil doesn't really want to burn in that way.  If you ever do any major engine work (not that I've done any on the '2, but on other cars)  then oil tends to get everywhere.  It only takes a few minutes to burn off, smells terrible and smokes quite badly, but I've never had anything to worry about from flames, even with major cam cover leaks like on a friend's 309.

There was a study done by some TV investigation on car fires years ago (I can't remember which programme) which found that it was actually brake fluid that ignited on a hot manifold and not oil or petrol, which both needed a spark.

#117
Ditto to that - I've had both oil and petrol leaks on cars, and none have exploded in flames yet  s:) :) s:)  Heck, the 300ZX was positively belching fuel straight onto the top of the engine at one point..   s:oops:  s:oops:

OK, just had a go at applying the penetrating oil.  The bolts are all very badly rusted (this is Ireland, after all) to the point of almost crumbling.

How in the name of god's green earth do you get to the three on the exhaust if you don't have ramps or jackstands?  It doesn't look like taking off the diaper will help (and I'd rather not anyway).

I guarantee that mine is going to give the most trouble on the day.  s:oops:  s:oops:
