And I've just walked in too.. to echo everyone else - a big thanks to Mark & Chris for hosting it all and catering! And excellent food too  s:) :) s:)

Good to meet all of you today  s:) :) s:)  Even if I didn't know who Heath was until after he'd gone  s;) ;) s;)  Everyone seemed to recognise me though, I can't think how  s;) ;) s;)

Stu - I'm glad you're getting all the photographic flak, and I'm glad there aren't pictures of me getting covered in water from the hose and the bucket while underneath Steve's car! Are there?  s:D :D s:D

I'm now walking rather like I'm crippled, and my feet are absolute agony  s:lol:  s:lol:  Ah well  s:) :) s:)

Most of you looked nothing like I imagined, by the way.. most odd  s:) :) s:)

Thank you Mark and Chris.  Fantastic hospitality and a nice bunch of people to meet as well.

Sorry to hear about the troubles after I had left (I made it back in time for my anniversary meal).

Mark, you are a star.  [now where's the we're not worthy smilie?]

Glad too see I was not the hardest one of the day after all!

Thanks to Mark and Chris for the day and the food, I feel much more at ease with the car without its small timebombs.

Good to see new and old faces again, what happened to the orange heatshield in the end?

A HUGE thank you to Mark and Chris for their excellent hospitality and a massive thank you to everyone else.  So, mine doesn't get the 'Pain in the Arse' award for the day then?    s:wink:  s:wink:

It was great to finally meet people on this forum, although I have to admit it won't do my wallet any good as all your cars looked great!!

Looking forward to seeing a pic of King Kongs condom *ahem* I mean protective sheaf!

My car's out of warranty next month, and since it looks like I'm going to have to have a go at removing them myself (Hertfordshire is just too far to travel) I'd really appreciate it if people could flag up any problems I'm likely to encounter, based on the experience gathered at the two gutting meets held so far.

I've got Grant's guide, and I've already removed my heatshield and O2 sensors to check on the pre-cats (they look fine), so I know these will come off easily. I'm going to start treating the manifold nuts with penetrating oil, and continue over the next few weeks. Are there any other precautions/things I can do to make life easier when it comes to the fateful day?  The thing that most concerns me is the actual destroying of the cat material - is it obvious what has to come out?

Thanks for any advice   s:D :D s:D

main problems encountered were

1)sheared heatshield bolts
2)1/2 ton cow manure and mud on nappies
3)bottom of manifold bolts being tighter than a gnats chuff
4)engine block/manifold nuts corroding and not releasing at all causeing rounded nuts
5)bruised,cut and burnt knuckles  s:cry:  s:cry:

and yes it is obvious what has to come out, the white honeycombe material, best tool for removal is a long masonary drill bit in a hammer drill and a long chisel

My thanks as well to Mark, all the boys, and Chris as well for the fabulous breakfast and lunch.

Well I am officially the first gut with an O2 sensor still in place, and guys, I am glad to say no CEL lights on the way home, and no apparant loss in performance. So it can be done if needed again.   s:wink:  s:wink:

That's good to know Roger - very glad to hear that  s:) :) s:)

And yep, it was a day for firsts really - first gutting with a power drill, first gutting with an O2 in place, and first gutting with the manifold still on the car  s:) :) s:)

Just happened to be browsing Machine Mart (looking for tool chests & tool sets like Mark's very snazzy sets  s;) ;) s;) ) and happened across these:

I think a set of these (in the right size) might well have gotten those troublesome manifold studs & nuts out..

Chris and Mark, what can I say? Amazing hospitality.  s:shock:  s:shock:   I think you humbled us all. Sorry to hear that it all went pear-shaped after I departed at 4:10pm. It actually took only two hours to get home, so I could have stayed a bit longer. Fantastic to put names to faces, though knowing me, I'll have forgotten them all by the nest meeeting.  s:oops:  s:oops:

So who's the lucky person who ended up with my pencil case/scalpel and cutting mat?! I'll pay postage to get them back!

Anyway, A huge THANK YOU to Chris and Mark, and everyone else. Great day. And I'm sure my car is more responsive in 6th gear now...

*cough* DP, you should really check your PMs  s;) ;) s;)

I have them.. I shall construct a ransom note using your own scalpel, and then post it to you along with something from your pencil case so you know I'm serious...

I jest  s:lol:  s:lol:  I'm up in Sheffield the week after next (i.e. 20th-24th), so I can run them over to you one night unless you need them before then?

Indeed..

Elle has nothing on you, Liz  s;) ;) s;)

s:lol:  s:lol:  I came out of Mark's pit looking rather like I'd had a large accident in the bathroom..

Still, it was a good day - good fun, too, it's been a while since I spent a whole day mechanicing, and it's always less worrying when it's someone elses car you're setting fire to  s:lol:  s:lol:

These are the ones that worry me - what does one do with rounded nuts?!  I'm also concerned about one shearing off, as I wouldn't know how to remove it...

Mind you, it must be nice to meet people off here and put faces to names - everyone seem to be very helpful, friendly people.[/quote]

No probs. I suddenly noticed the time – 4pm – and thought that I'd better get the heatshield and o2 sensors back on and bugger off. I was worried about traffic. I needen't have bothered – it only took two hours to get home. Must be those free-flowing exhaust gasses!  s:lol:  s:lol:  So I totally forgot about my bits.  s:oops:  s:oops:

Just got back to Dublin after a great time meeting everyone!

I am so grateful to Chris and Mark for their generous hospitality and to Mark and Stu and Aaron for breaking their brains and bodies on my car's manifold until all hours of the night and after a very long day.

Thanks so much to you all.

Car seemed fine on the way home.  Maybe a tiny bit louder growl, so that's a plus.

And now, without further ado, here's Stu getting ready to dive in in his full-body condom  s:lol:  s:lol:  :

More pictures soon.
